As a driver, one of the most uneasy feelings is when you notice your vehicle shudder when driving. Is it a flat tire, did that pothole ruin my suspension, or did I break the driveshaft? There are several parts that may be the culprit as to why your car is shuddering, and the severity of the potential damage can vary greatly. The most probable cause of the vibrating generally happens near your wheels and tires. They plant the vehicle on the road, and if anything is out of place, you’re going to notice. It may be something like a broken control arm or a broken transmission mount. These more severe part failures could leave you stuck on the side of the road.

If you recently installed new wheels and tires, your car shuddering could be caused by the wheels and tires not being balanced correctly. Balancing the tires makes sure the weight of the tires and wheels are evenly distributed for the smoothest ride possible. If you feel the tire shaking when you are driving, it could very well be a tire that is no longer balanced properly. If the tires and wheels are balanced, but the car is still vibrating, make sure the tire pressure is correct, and be sure to check if the lugnuts are completely tightened and make sure the tire pressure is correct. If your tires are the cause of the vibration, you should have it checked out immediately.
If the vehicle shudders when you brake, that’s a pretty obvious signal that you should have the brakes checked out. The most obvious reason for your steering wheel vibration is warped rotors. When you press the brake pedal, brake pads squeeze the brake rotors to create friction which will then stop your vehicle. If you want smooth braking, you need a smooth surface. A warped rotor surface will cause shakes when braking, kind of like how a brick road feels rougher than a highway.
